The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has imposed fines on Enyimba and Rangers International following infractions during their recent Matchday 35 clash. Dubbed the Oriental Derby, the game at Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium witnessed chaos as a contentious penalty awarded to Enugu Rangers led to the match's abandonment. Consequently, Rangers International was awarded three points and goals.
Enyimba FC incurred a hefty 10 million naira fine for their role in the incident. Moreover, three Enyimba players face individual sanctions pending further investigation. Rangers International, on the other hand, was fined 5 million naira for various violations, including security lapses and overcrowding at the stadium. With over 25,000 fans in attendance, the game was a spectacle, but the controversies marred the sporting spirit.
The league standings now see Rangers International atop with 64 points, followed closely by Enyimba FC and Remo Stars tied at 59 points each. Both clubs have a window of 48 hours to contest the NPFL's decisions.
