Nuhu Ribadu, Nigeria's National Security Adviser, referred to Aminu Ado Bayero as the Emir of Kano during an event in Abuja, highlighting the ongoing legitimacy dispute between Bayero and former Emir Muhammad Sanusi II. The Kano Emirate has been embroiled in political tensions and legal battles for control.
At a recent event in Abuja, Nuhu Ribadu, Nigeria's National Security Adviser, created a stir by addressing Aminu Ado Bayero as the Emir of Kano. Representing President Bola Tinubu at the inaugural international lecture organized by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Ribadu recognized Bayero amid a mixed political backdrop.
This recognition came as the Emirate has been embroiled in a contentious dispute involving Bayero and Muhammad Sanusi II. The tensions escalated after the Kano State House of Assembly passed a law in May 2019, resulting in the fragmentation of the Kano Emirate into five smaller emirates, purportedly to limit Sanusi's influence. Subsequently, Sanusi was dethroned by former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje in March 2020.
In a recent political twist, Abba Yusuf, the current governor, reinstated Sanusi after the Kano State legislature repealed the earlier law, restoring the traditional single Emirate system. Meanwhile, Bayero, although previously deposed, returned to Kano, igniting speculation about federal support, particularly following claims that Ribadu facilitated his return using private jets—allegations that Ribadu has denied and is seeking legal action against.
