The NYSC has cited funding challenges as the reason for delaying the ₦77,000 stipend increase for corps members. Despite the Federal Government’s approval, payments remain at ₦33,000. Officials assure efforts to resolve the issue, but no timeline is given. Corps members await relief amid rising living costs.

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has attributed the delay in implementing the newly approved ₦77,000 monthly stipend for corps members to funding challenges, despite the Federal Government’s approval of the raise in July 2024.

Corps members, who were expecting the increased allowance to take effect in February 2025, have continued to receive the previous ₦33,000 stipend, sparking growing frustration amid Nigeria’s escalating cost of living.

NYSC Acting Director of Information and Public Relations, Carol Embu, addressed the issue in Abuja, stating that while efforts are underway to secure the necessary funds, the process requires time and due diligence. She emphasized that the new NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Olakunle Oluseye Nafiu, who recently assumed office, is still assessing the situation.

Embu assured that updates would be provided once more clarity is achieved but refrained from giving a specific timeline for when corps members can expect the revised payments. She noted that the Minister overseeing the NYSC has additional insights into the situation and is actively involved in resolving the matter.

The delay has left many corps members struggling to cope financially, with stakeholders urging the government to expedite the funding process. As discussions continue, corps members remain hopeful that the promised allowance increase will be implemented soon to ease their financial burdens.
