NYSC member Ushie Uguamaye, known as Raye, apologizes for calling Lagos a “smelling state” in a viral TikTok video. The apology comes after her comments about the city's environment sparked outrage. Raye explains her remarks were part of a 30-day rant challenge to address Nigeria’s social and economic issues.

Ushie Uguamaye, better known as Raye, a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member stationed in Lagos, has publicly apologized for calling Lagos a “smelling state” in a TikTok video that recently went viral. Raye’s video, which critiqued Nigeria’s economic and environmental conditions, sparked significant reactions, particularly from residents of Lagos and officials of the NYSC.

In an Instagram post on Monday, Raye expressed regret over her insensitive remarks, stating that she never meant to insult Lagosians or the city itself. As a newcomer to Lagos, Raye explained that her comments about the city's air quality were based on her personal observations, not an intentional attack on the state or its residents.

Raye's remarks were part of a 30-day “rant challenge” aimed at addressing Nigeria's socio-economic challenges. While her initial plan was to release 20 videos, her first post quickly gained attention, resonating with many Nigerians frustrated by the country’s financial struggles. She admitted that her video’s viral success came as a surprise and stressed that her intention was to spark conversations about the issues facing young Nigerians, particularly their financial hardships.

Raye's apology was heartfelt, acknowledging the love and pride many Lagosians feel for their city. She urged Nigerians to focus on the pressing need for better living conditions rather than distractions like her controversial statement.

Despite the backlash, Raye emphasized that the conversation around economic hardship and the need for systemic change should remain the priority. She concluded by encouraging Nigerians to continue demanding the improvements they deserve.
