Mudashiru Obasa’s removal as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly has been confirmed, with his exit to be officially recorded as a resignation. Mojisola Meranda is also set to step down, making way for a new Speaker from Lagos West to maintain political balance in the state.

After weeks of political maneuvering, Mudashiru Obasa will not return as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, with his removal set to be officially recorded as a resignation. The decision follows intense consultations between President Bola Tinubu and key APC leaders, who agreed that reinstating Obasa would be politically unviable, given the overwhelming opposition from lawmakers and state political figures.

To maintain political balance, the current Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, is also expected to step down, as her position conflicts with Lagos’ power-sharing structure. With the governor from Lagos Central and his deputy from Lagos East, the speakership will now shift to Lagos West, the state’s largest senatorial district.

While Tinubu reportedly had no particular attachment to Obasa’s fate, he was displeased with being blindsided by the impeachment process. However, following extensive discussions, a resolution was reached to allow for a smooth transition without further political tension.

The search for a new Speaker will now focus on Lagos West, though efforts to appoint a woman from the district fell through due to political constraints. The leadership reshuffle is seen as a move to stabilize the Assembly while ensuring all senatorial districts have a stake in governance.
