Former Lagos Assembly Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, has sued the House and new Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, over his removal. Obasa claims due process was ignored as the Assembly was on recess. He seeks a court ruling to overturn his impeachment, arguing it was politically motivated and unconstitutional.

Former Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, has taken legal action against the Assembly and its new Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, challenging the legitimacy of his removal from office.

Obasa, through his lawyer, Chief Afolabi Fashanu (SAN), filed a suit at the Lagos State High Court, Ikeja, arguing that his impeachment on January 13, 2025, was unlawful. He claims that the Assembly was on recess at the time and that due process was not followed. The lawsuit seeks a court ruling to invalidate his removal, citing constitutional violations and breaches of the House’s standing orders.

In his application, Obasa has requested an expedited hearing, urging the court to limit the response time for the defendants to seven days post-hearing. He also wants the time for filing replies restricted to three days to ensure a swift resolution.

The former Speaker alleges that his impeachment was politically motivated and carried out in his absence while he was outside the country. He further accuses the Lagos State Commissioner of Police of facilitating the process, claiming that security forces stormed his residence and the Assembly complex during the incident.

Meanwhile, his successor, Meranda, who was elected by over two-thirds of the 40-member Assembly, remains the first female Speaker in Lagos State. Despite his legal challenge, no date has been set for the hearing.

Obasa insists that his removal was orchestrated and insists that the court must intervene to uphold the rule of law in the state’s legislative process.
