Olusegun Obasanjo honors the late Jimmy Carter for his efforts in securing his release from Sani Abacha’s prison in 1995. During a memorial service, Obasanjo recalled Carter's pivotal role in negotiating his house arrest, describing him as a true friend and expressing gratitude for his unwavering support.
In a heartfelt tribute to the late US President Jimmy Carter, former Nigerian president Olusegun Obasanjo shared how Carter played a crucial role in securing his release from prison during the Sani Abacha regime. Obasanjo was imprisoned in 1995 on charges of plotting a coup, but was released after Abacha’s death in 1998.
During a memorial service for Carter, Obasanjo recalled the former US president’s persistent efforts to secure his freedom. Obasanjo revealed that Carter was the only non-African leader to visit Abacha in person to plead for his release. As a result of Carter’s intervention, Obasanjo was moved from detention to house arrest on his farm, though the arrangement was short-lived.
Obasanjo also shared a touching moment when Carter expressed gratitude towards media mogul Ted Turner for his support in advocating for Obasanjo’s release. Turner had offered to take care of Obasanjo and his family after his release, a gesture that deeply moved the former Nigerian president.
Reflecting on Carter’s legacy, Obasanjo praised him for his selfless commitment to humanitarian causes, calling him a true friend who will be greatly missed. Obasanjo concluded by saying that despite the loss, he was certain they would meet again in the afterlife.
