Peter Obi responds to accusations from Labour Party Chairman Julius Abure, who alleged betrayal over a stakeholders’ meeting. Obi's spokesperson emphasized the meeting's intent to resolve internal conflicts and urged Abure to prioritize party interests, calling his accusations politically motivated and misleading to the public.

Peter Obi, the former presidential candidate for the Labour Party, has responded to accusations of betrayal made by Barrister Julius Abure, the party's national chairman. During a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting on September 9, Abure claimed that Obi and Abia State Governor Dr. Alex Otti conspired against him by convening a stakeholders’ meeting in Umuahia, where former Finance Minister Esther Nenadi Usman was elected to lead a 29-member caretaker committee aimed at addressing internal conflicts within the party.

In his rebuttal, Obi, through his spokesperson Comrade Ibrahim Umar, expressed disappointment at Abure’s claims, arguing that they misrepresent the party's current situation. He accused Abure of defaming Obi's character and misleading the public. Umar emphasized that the Umuahia meeting was a legitimate effort to resolve the ongoing leadership crisis and not a personal attack on Abure.

He stated, “We are disappointed but not surprised by these politically motivated accusations.” The Obidient Movement, according to Umar, remains committed to principles of unity, justice, and transparency. He also questioned Abure’s motives, noting his reluctance to step down despite his tenure ending in June. Umar called on Abure to prioritize the party’s interests over personal ambitions and to accept the outcomes of the efforts made by Obi and Otti to foster unity within the Labour Party.
