The Ogun State Government has closed Obada Grammar School in Idi-Emi following the death of Monday Arijo, a Senior Secondary School 2 student, reportedly caused by corporal punishment from a teacher. This incident, which occurred last Friday, has led to immediate actions from state officials.

Governor Dapo Abiodun mandated the suspension and arrest of the teacher involved, as well as the suspension of the school’s Principal, Tamrat Onaolapo, for permitting such actions, which contravene state regulations. In addition, the governor has initiated the formation of a panel to thoroughly investigate the circumstances surrounding this tragic event, ensuring that those responsible will face appropriate legal action.

Officials from the state government visited Arijo’s family to extend condolences and collect information about the incident for the investigation. The delegation included representatives from the Ministry of Education and various educational organizations, all expressing their heartfelt sympathy and support for the grieving family.

To assist the family during this difficult time, the state government provided a condolence letter along with a financial gift of ₦500,000. Governor Abiodun has emphasized his commitment to accountability and stated that the findings from the investigation will be taken seriously to prevent similar incidents in the future within schools throughout the state.
