Fidelis Chukwu has been named president-general of Ohanaeze Ndigbo following the passing of Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu. Chukwu, a seasoned executive and former PDP vice chairman, will serve the remaining Imo State tenure. His leadership comes amid efforts to maintain unity and address challenges within the South-East region.

Fidelis Chukwu, former national vice chairman (South-East) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has been appointed president-general of Ohanaeze Ndigbo. His emergence follows the demise of previous leaders Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu and George Obiozor.

The appointment was announced during the Ime-Obi meeting in Enugu, as confirmed by Alex Ogbonnia, Ohanaeze’s national publicity secretary. Chukwu will serve the remaining tenure allocated to Imo State until January 2025.

Chukwu’s selection continues a series of leadership transitions necessitated by the passing of Obiozor in 2022 and Iwuanyanwu in 2024. Iwuanyanwu, who assumed the role in April 2023, passed away in July 2024, prompting the Imo State chapter of Ohanaeze to nominate Chukwu.

The motion for Chukwu’s adoption was moved by Eze Cletus Ilomuanya, Chairman of the Imo Council of Elders, and seconded by Chief Simon Okeke. Chukwu was praised as a "cerebral thinker" with a rich educational background, including studies at institutions like Oxford, Harvard, and the University of Lagos.

A seasoned management executive, Chukwu previously held leadership roles at Inland Bank Plc and Nigeria Merchant Bank Plc. His extensive experience and qualifications were key factors in his selection.

Chukwu is expected to guide Ohanaeze Ndigbo through this critical period, addressing the challenges facing the organization and the Igbo community at large. His appointment marks another chapter in the group's efforts to uphold unity and progress within the South-East region.
