Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has vowed to petition the EFCC over alleged N96bn fraud under ex-Governor Godwin Obaseki. A panel report accused former local government chairmen of fund misappropriation. Obaseki’s camp dismissed the claims as politically motivated, urging a focus on governance instead of "witch-hunts."
Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has announced plans to petition the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over an alleged N96 billion fraud linked to the administration of his predecessor, Godwin Obaseki.
A panel set up to investigate the state's finances under the previous government reportedly uncovered large-scale mismanagement, particularly at the local government level. According to the panel's findings, several former local government chairmen were involved in financial irregularities, with funds allegedly diverted for purposes not accounted for.
Governor Okpebholo emphasized the need for accountability, stating that public funds must be properly managed. His administration has pledged to ensure that those responsible for any misappropriation face legal consequences.
However, Obaseki’s camp has dismissed the allegations as politically motivated, accusing the current government of attempting to tarnish the former governor’s reputation. They argue that instead of pursuing what they describe as a "witch-hunt," the focus should be on governance and development.
The EFCC has yet to respond to the planned petition, but the development has sparked reactions across political circles in Edo State. While some residents support the move as a step toward transparency, others see it as part of ongoing political tensions between the past and present administrations.
