Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo visited Kano State on Monday to offer condolences to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf over the killing of 16 Kano-bound travelers in Uromi, Edo State.
Arriving at the Kano Government House at noon, Okpebholo was welcomed by Yusuf and other state officials. Addressing the tragedy, Okpebholo expressed deep sorrow over the incident, which saw members of a vigilante group mistakenly attack a group of hunters traveling from Port Harcourt to Kano for Eid-el-Fitr celebrations.
The Edo governor reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring swift justice for the victims' families, revealing that 14 suspects had already been arrested and transferred to Abuja for interrogation. He emphasized the long-standing relationship between the Hausa community and the people of Edo, stating that such an incident should never have happened.
Governor Yusuf, in his response, demanded that those responsible for the killings be publicly paraded to ensure transparency in the judicial process. He praised Kano as a state that embraces diversity and urged for justice to be served without delay.
Both leaders later visited Toronkawa village in Bunkure Local Government Area, where they met with grieving families and reassured them of government intervention.
Meanwhile, President Bola Tinubu has ordered security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation, condemning the act as shocking and unacceptable. His administration has vowed to hold the perpetrators accountable and prevent future occurrences of such violence.
