The tragic killing of troops from the 181 Amphibious Battalion of the Nigerian Army during a peace mission following a communal clash between Okuama and Okoloba Communities in Delta State is deeply lamentable and must be unequivocally condemned.
The soldiers, committed to maintaining peace and security in the Niger Delta Region, were brutally murdered by armed youth from Okuama, who callously desecrated their remains. Instead of cooperating with authorities to apprehend the perpetrators, the Okuama community has resorted to media propaganda, indicating complicity in the crime.
However, attempts to manipulate public opinion must be dismissed, and the perpetrators brought to justice. While the army assures no reprisals, efforts are intensified to identify and apprehend the criminals.
The Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Toareed Lagbaja, has pledged relentless pursuit of justice for the fallen soldiers. The community's callous actions are met with resolute determination from the army, leaving no refuge for the perpetrators.
