In the aftermath of the tragic incident in Okuama community, where 16 military personnel lost their lives, residents have come forward with harrowing testimonies detailing the alleged reprisal carried out by soldiers.
According to reports, the troops, deployed on a peace mission following communal unrest between Okuama and Okoloba communities in Delta State, responded to a distress call but escalated the situation with a violent attack.
While the military has emphasized adherence to rules of engagement and human rights standards, residents have accused them of mass killings, recounting a disturbing sequence of events.
Speaking anonymously to DRTV, witnesses described how soldiers, initially welcomed into the community for a peace talk at the town hall, turned aggressive when met with resistance upon attempting to take community leaders away.
This resistance reportedly led to a sudden outbreak of gunfire, resulting in multiple casualties, including women and children. As the community reels from the tragedy, residents are calling for government intervention and assistance, highlighting the urgent need for accountability and justice in the face of such devastating violence.
