A suspected vote buyer was arrested in Akure, Ondo State, on November 16, 2024, during the ongoing governorship election. The man, whose identity remains undisclosed, was apprehended by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) at Ward 4, Polling Unit 007, near St. Stephen’s Primary School.
According to reports, the suspect was carrying two large bags, commonly known as “Ghana must go” bags, which were believed to contain money intended for vote-buying.
DSS officers, acting on intelligence, stopped the man and searched his vehicle. The search revealed the two bags of cash, along with a cutlass hidden in the car’s boot.
The suspect was subsequently detained and taken away in a DSS bus. While the DSS has not yet released an official statement regarding the incident, the arrest highlights the agency’s vigilance in tackling electoral malpractice during the election.
This arrest comes amidst concerns about the integrity of the election process, with reports of a slow start and low voter turnout in many parts of the state.
