The Osun APC has withdrawn from the February 22 local government election following a Court of Appeal ruling that reinstated its sacked council officials. The decision has sparked controversy with the PDP, leading to violent clashes that left six dead. Security forces have been deployed to restore order.

The Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has opted out of the local government election scheduled for February 22, citing a recent Court of Appeal ruling. The party argues that the judgment, delivered on February 10, reinstates its previously removed chairmen and councillors, making the election unnecessary.

In a letter addressed to the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC), APC State Secretary Alao Kamoru explained that the court’s decision invalidates any need for new local government polls. He emphasized that the reinstated officials have already resumed office, and any fresh election would contradict the ruling.

However, the development has triggered tension between APC and the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). While APC asserts that the court verdict legally restores its officials, PDP contends that the ruling does not automatically return them to office. The disagreement escalated into violent confrontations, leaving six people dead and several others injured.

The unrest reached its peak when members of both parties engaged in clashes over access to local government secretariats. Security operatives have since been deployed to prevent further chaos, with authorities urging political leaders to resolve disputes through lawful means.

Observers fear that the situation could destabilize governance in the state, calling for calm and dialogue. Meanwhile, law enforcement agencies have launched investigations to hold those responsible for the violence accountable.
