The Osun State Government has rejected police advice to postpone today’s local government elections, citing rule of law concerns. Authorities accused the police of partisanship and vowed to proceed with the polls. Governor Adeleke’s administration assured voters of a credible election despite security warnings.
The Osun State Government has dismissed the Nigeria Police Force's request to postpone the local government elections scheduled for today, citing security concerns.
In a statement, the police had warned of potential violence if the election proceeded. However, the state government, through Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment Kolapo Alimi, rejected the advice, alleging police bias in favor of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The government insisted that the elections must go on, referencing a court ruling that confirmed vacancies in local councils and directed security agencies to facilitate the process. Authorities accused the police of undermining democracy by siding with a political party rather than upholding the rule of law.
Despite security concerns, Governor Ademola Adeleke’s administration reaffirmed its commitment to conducting a free and fair election, urging residents to exercise their voting rights peacefully.
