The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Osun has ordered local government workers to suspend duties due to political unrest. The directive follows violent clashes between APC and PDP supporters, raising safety concerns. The NLC insists workers won’t return until security is assured, urging authorities to restore peace in the state.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Osun State has directed local government workers to suspend their duties due to rising political tensions following the recent local elections. The union expressed concerns over the safety of its members, citing violent clashes between opposing political factions.

Christopher Arapasopo, the Osun NLC chairman, emphasized that the decision was necessary to prevent harm to workers amid the unrest. He reiterated that the union would not compromise on members' security, urging them to stay away from their offices until calm is restored.

The political turmoil erupted after the swearing-in of newly elected local government chairpersons. Governor Ademola Adeleke advised them to avoid secretariats to prevent confrontations with opposition groups. Despite this, tensions escalated, leading to violent clashes between supporters of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC). Reports indicate that at least six people were shot, while several properties were damaged during the violence.

In response, the NLC had earlier instructed workers to withdraw their services on February 16, citing concerns over political interference. The ongoing crisis has sparked widespread concern among residents, with calls for urgent intervention to restore order.

As the situation remains tense, local government workers continue to stay away from their duties, awaiting further directives from labor leaders and the state government. The NLC has reaffirmed its stance, stating that it will not allow its members to work under unsafe conditions.
