The Osun State PDP has accused IGP Kayode Egbetokun of plotting to assassinate Governor Ademola Adeleke amid a violent local government crisis. The party claims police special forces enabled unrest, resulting in multiple deaths. PDP warns of a broader conspiracy to undermine Adeleke and disrupt upcoming local elections.

The political atmosphere in Osun State has become tense as the People's Democratic Party (PDP) alleges that Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun is plotting to assassinate Governor Ademola Adeleke. The accusation comes amid an escalating local government crisis that has led to violent clashes and multiple fatalities.

Speaking at a press conference in Osogbo, PDP Chairman Sunday Bisi claimed that the IGP deployed police special forces to escort armed individuals into council secretariats, allegedly to incite chaos and destabilize the state. According to Bisi, these actions are part of a larger scheme to undermine the Adeleke administration and pave the way for opposition elements to regain control.

The crisis erupted when sacked local government chairmen and councilors from the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) attempted to reclaim their positions, leading to violent confrontations that left several people dead. Among the victims was Remi Abass, the ousted chairman of Irewole Local Government, who was killed in Ikire.

Bisi questioned why the police acted independently of the governor's authority, accusing the IGP of breaching protocol and fueling unrest instead of maintaining order. He further suggested that the police intervention was a calculated move to disrupt the upcoming local government elections scheduled for February 22, 2025.

The PDP has called on the international community to intervene, warning that the situation in Osun State is a test of Nigeria’s democracy. Meanwhile, the police force has yet to officially respond to the allegations.
