The Federal Government has dismissed Ohieku Salami from his role as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council at the Federal University of Health Sciences, Otukpo, Benue State. This decision, announced by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, on November 20, 2024, was taken due to allegations of misconduct and breaches of established procedures.
According to a statement by the Federal Ministry of Education’s Director of Press, Folashade Boriowo, Salami's actions included the unlawful suspension of the university's Vice-Chancellor, which was done without adherence to procedural requirements. Despite interventions and directives from the ministry to reverse the suspension, Salami reportedly refused to comply and exhibited abusive behavior toward ministry officials, including the Permanent Secretary.
Dr. Alausa condemned these actions, stating that they undermined the ministry's supervisory authority and jeopardized the stability of the institution. To address these challenges, he emphasized the need for leadership that adheres to due process and promotes accountability within the university's governance framework.
As part of the corrective measures, the Minister of Education has called for the appointment of a new Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council to restore order and ensure the university operates effectively under the law.
