Nigerian lawmaker threatens legal action against UK-based Nigerian for publishing alleged salaries online. Controversy sparks debate on transparency, lawmakers' compensation, and public scrutiny.

A Kogi state lawmaker in Nigeria's House of Representatives has threatened legal action against a UK-based Nigerian for publicizing alleged salaries and allowances of lawmakers on social media. The lawmaker, Elder Leke Joseph Abejide, expressed his grievance on the House floor, claiming that the individual, identified as Adeola, had breached his privileges by spreading false information about lawmakers' compensation.

Abejide detailed the alleged figures shared by Adeola, including a basic salary of ₦2.5 million per month and various allowances for furniture, newspapers, wardrobe, accommodation, utilities, and personal assistance. He also mentioned a previous allegation by Adeola about lawmakers receiving a trailer of rice in December 2023.

The lawmaker defended the transparency of the House, stating that many members struggle financially due to constituent demands. He urged the House to take a stand against such allegations, threatening individual legal action if necessary.

Public reactions to the lawmaker's statement have been largely critical. Many commenters expressed skepticism about the lawmakers' claims of financial struggle and demanded full transparency regarding their compensation. Some argued that as public servants, lawmakers should willingly disclose their earnings and benefits.

Critics also questioned the lawmaker's priorities, suggesting that focusing on constituent needs and national development should take precedence over personal grievances. Several comments reflected a broader frustration with perceived political corruption and lack of accountability in Nigeria.
