Ruth Hwara, awaiting a kidney transplant, tragically died after funds raised for her surgery were allegedly stolen by an Ecocash agent. The incident has sparked outrage, with many calling for justice. The suspect, Tendai Chibwe, was charged with fraud but granted bail as investigations continue

A tragic story has emerged from Zimbabwe, where Ruth Hwara, a young woman in need of a kidney transplant, has died after funds raised for her treatment were allegedly stolen.

Ruth’s story began with hope when her uncle, Nigel Makono, sought public donations to cover the costs of her urgent medical procedure. Generous well-wishers contributed $13,000, but their efforts were reportedly thwarted when an EcoCash agent, Tendai Chibwe, is said to have misappropriated the majority of the funds.

Chibwe allegedly received the donations under the pretense of assisting the family but only provided a fraction of the money, totaling $1,100. As the remaining funds vanished, Ruth’s condition deteriorated, ultimately leading to her death. Chibwe has been charged with fraud and is currently out on bail, awaiting a court hearing in September.

This heartbreaking incident has sparked outrage, particularly on social media. Many have expressed anger towards the alleged fraud, while others have raised concerns about the broader issues of medical funding and accountability. Joey Nyikadzino, a local influencer, condemned the actions that delayed Ruth’s treatment, implying that those responsible should face divine justice.

Ruth’s death is a stark reminder of the critical need for transparency and responsibility in managing funds intended for life-saving treatments. The tragedy has left a community mourning and questioning how such a betrayal could have occurred.
