The University of Ibadan (UI) is implementing a significant 480% increase in fees for fresh students, sparking concern among students and stakeholders. While UI's dean of student affairs initially confirmed the hike, the university's public relations officer indicated that the full fee structure would be available on the UI portal soon. Screenshots shared by concerned students revealed fees ranging from N203,500 to N412,000, with additional charges for utilities and technology.
This steep hike, compared to previous fees of N64,600 to N69,600, represents a 492.5% increase, with certain courses like Medicine bearing even higher costs. This move follows a trend among federal universities to raise fees due to rising operational expenses, prompting nationwide protests and negotiations for fee reductions.
However, UI's previous attempt to increase fees to an average of N175,000 per student was halted by the dissolution of public university governing councils by the federal government.
