A 29-year-old man, Joe Philip, also known as Aboy, was beaten to death by members of the Anioma Security Watch Network in Agbor, Delta State, over a missing Nokia torchlight phone.
The incident occurred on Father’s Day, June 16, 2024. Joe, who had just returned from church, was resting when an elderly woman asked to charge her phone in his room. While Joe was asleep, the woman's son retrieved the phone without Joe's knowledge. When the woman couldn’t find her phone, she accused Joe of theft, demanding the exact phone back. Joe offered to replace it, but the woman insisted on getting her original phone. She called in the local security outfit, who beat Joe severely despite pleas from bystanders.
Tragically, Joe died from his injuries, and the phone was later found with the woman’s son. The community is outraged, with many calling for justice. The police intervened to calm the situation, and Joe’s body was taken to Agbor Central Hospital.
Nigerians reacted with anger and disbelief on social media, condemning the woman and the vigilantes for their actions. Many urged for severe punishment for those responsible to prevent such tragedies in the future.
