The agency’s commitment to ensuring safe medicines for Nigerians is underscored by the large-scale operation.

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) recently destroyed counterfeit and substandard pharmaceutical products worth over N1 trillion in Anambra State. The operation took place at the Anambra State Waste Management Authority dump site in Awka. NAFDAC’s Director General, Mojisola Adeyeye, was represented by Dr. Martins Iluyomade, the agency's South-East Zonal Director. The seized products, which included illicit substances like Tramadol and banned drugs such as Analgin, were confiscated from major drug markets in Onitsha and Aba.

The destruction is part of a month-long enforcement effort aimed at addressing the growing concern of counterfeit products in the country. Adeyeye emphasized that the ongoing effort is essential for ensuring public health safety and eradicating dangerous drugs from circulation. The exercise, which involved over 100 trucks of fake drugs, highlights the massive scale of the counterfeit drug trade in Nigeria, with a direct impact on national security.

The Governor of Anambra State, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, expressed support for NAFDAC’s actions, acknowledging the role of fake drugs in undermining societal peace and security. NAFDAC also received praise for its commitment to fighting drug-related crimes and ensuring that the public has access to safe, effective medicines. The agency urged Nigerians to report counterfeit drug sightings to protect the nation’s health.
