A two-story building under construction at Ekeoyibo market, Amawbia, in Awka South local government area of Anambra state collapsed on July 4th, causing widespread panic among traders and residents. The incident, which occurred around noon, buried several traders beneath the rubble. Eyewitnesses reported that the building crumbled suddenly, trapping many people inside.

The casualty figure remains unconfirmed, but fears of fatalities are high. Emergency responders have been actively working on the scene. The Anambra State Police Command spokesman, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the rescue of two victims who were rushed to the hospital for urgent medical care. He stated that police operatives responded to a distress call and arrived at the scene around 12:40 pm.

Under the directives of Commissioner of Police CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of operations led an on-the-spot assessment, cordoning off the area to facilitate ongoing rescue operations. One rescued individual has been taken to Amawbia Maternity Home for medical attention.

The collapse has drawn significant attention on social media, with many users expressing sympathy for the victims and calling for stricter enforcement of building regulations to prevent future tragedies. As rescue efforts continue, the community remains hopeful for more survivors to be found amidst the debris.
