The Super Falcons of Nigeria suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Brazil in their first game at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Gabi Nunes’ goal in the 37th minute secured the win for Brazil in a tightly contested match in Bordeaux on Thursday.

Nigeria's head coach, Randy Waldrum, made the surprising decision to start without star striker Asisat Oshoala, opting instead for Chinwendu Ihezuo at the forefront of the attack. This change seemed to impact the Falcons' offensive capabilities, as they struggled to create significant scoring opportunities.

Captain Rasheedat Ajibade provided a spark with her dynamic play, creating a notable chance for Ihezuo, whose shot was easily saved by Brazil's goalkeeper, Lorena. Christy Ucheibe also tested Lorena with a sharp effort but to no avail.

Marta, the veteran Brazilian forward, appeared to have scored in the 36th minute, but her effort was ruled offside after a VAR review. Shortly thereafter, a defensive lapse allowed Nunes to capitalize, scoring the decisive goal by slotting the ball past Chiamaka Nnadozie.

Despite a late push to equalize, the Super Falcons could not break through Brazil's defense. Nigeria will next face Spain on Sunday, followed by a match against Japan on July 31, as they seek to advance from Group C.
