Team Nigeria's athletics squad experienced a mixed start at the Paris 2024 Olympics on Friday. The nation’s athletes competed in five events, with only two advancing to the next stage.
In the new 4x400 meters mixed relay, the team of Adewale Adeyemi, Omolara Ogunmakinju, Dubem Nwachukwu, and Patience Okon George set a new national record with a time of 3:11.99. Despite this achievement, they finished 9th in their time slot and did not qualify for the finals. Temitope Adeshina also fell short in the high jump, clearing 1.88 meters but missing out on further progression.
In the women’s discus, Anumba Ashley, Onyekwere Chioma, and Amaechi Obiageri did not advance past the qualifying round. However, there were brighter moments as Rosemary Chukwuma secured a semi-final spot with an 11.26-second finish in the Women’s 100-meter heat. Tima Godbless, meanwhile, was eliminated after placing 6th in her heat.
Chukwuebuka Enekwechi advanced to the final of the Men’s Shot Put, placing 9th with a throw of 21.13 meters. He remains a hopeful contender for a medal. Today, Chukwuma will compete in the Women’s 100-meter semi-final, and Enekwechi will vie for a place on the podium in his final.
As the Games continue, Team Nigeria's athletes are poised to build on their performances and make a strong push in upcoming events.
