Nigeria’s Super Falcons have been eliminated from the 2024 Paris Olympics following a 3-1 defeat to Japan in their final group stage match at Stade de la Beaujoire on Wednesday. Despite a valiant effort, the Nigerian team’s hopes of advancing to the knockout stages were dashed as they finished the group stage without earning any points.

In the match, Nigeria, which had previously lost 1-0 to Spain and Brazil, needed a significant win to progress. However, Japan's Maiko Hamano broke the deadlock in the 22nd minute, and Mina Tanaka doubled the lead ten minutes later. Jennifer Echegini pulled one back for Nigeria in the 42nd minute with a well-placed shot after a brilliant exchange with Asisat Oshoala. Nonetheless, Japan regained their two-goal advantage just before halftime through a free-kick by Hikaru Kitagawa.

The second half saw the Super Falcons pressing hard to score but they were unable to penetrate Japan's solid defense. The final whistle confirmed a 3-1 loss, sealing Nigeria’s exit from the tournament. Despite Echegini’s impressive goal, Nigeria’s lackluster performance across their three matches led to their early departure.

The game also highlighted individual performances, with goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie receiving a 6/10 rating for her efforts, while defender Chidinma Okeke struggled significantly and was rated 3/10. The Super Falcons' coach, Randy Waldrum, made minimal changes to the lineup but could not alter the outcome. The loss marks another disappointing chapter for Nigeria’s women's football team in the Olympics.
