UK-based pastor Tobi Adegboyega calls Nigerian superstar Davido a gospel artiste, citing his song Stand Strong. Speaking on a podcast, Adegboyega defended inviting secular musicians to his birthday, emphasizing friendship over labels. The controversial statement has ignited debates on gospel music and Adegboyega’s unconventional approach to ministry.

Controversial UK-based Nigerian pastor, Tobi Adegboyega, sparked online debate after calling music superstar Davido a gospel artiste. During an appearance on the Off The Record podcast, Adegboyega, who is reportedly facing deportation over alleged fraud in the UK, explained his reasoning behind inviting secular musicians to his recent birthday celebration.

According to Adegboyega, gospel means "good news," and by that definition, Davido’s music qualifies. He cited Davido’s hit song Stand Strong as an example of gospel artistry. "Davido is my friend and wanted to perform for me. I didn’t pay him or any other musician. They are my friends, and I prioritize friendship over public opinion," he said.

The pastor dismissed criticism from traditional gospel artists, questioning their support during his challenging moments. He noted that Zlatan, another secular artist, is "like a son" to him, and his events feature those close to him, regardless of labels.

Adegboyega’s comments drew mixed reactions on social media. While some criticized his remarks as an attempt to blur boundaries between secular and gospel music, others saw it as a reflection of his connection to the artists.
