Despite a court ruling, the elections proceeded, resulting in the Action Peoples Party winning 22 out of 23 local government areas, amidst claims of undermining democracy.

The Rivers State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has criticized Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, for his remarks about the recent local government elections. In a recent interview, Wike expressed dissatisfaction with Governor Siminalayi Fubara's choice to proceed with the elections, despite a court ruling that stated the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) did not follow necessary procedures, specifically failing to provide a 90-day notice.

The court also prohibited the Independent National Electoral Commission from supplying the voter register and restricted security agencies from offering protection during the elections. Nonetheless, the elections took place, with the Action Peoples Party winning 22 out of 23 local government areas.

In reaction to Wike's claims that Fubara was undermining democracy, the PDP encouraged Wike and his supporters to pursue legal action if they were unhappy with the election results. Sydney Gbara, the PDP publicity secretary, noted that no court decision could stop an electoral process and defended Fubara as a "hero" for following Supreme Court mandates regarding local elections. He condemned the violence that accompanied the polls, asserting that the people of Rivers State had decided to support Fubara’s administration, moving away from Wike’s previous influence.
