Ahead of the 2027 presidential election, opposition leaders Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Rabiu Kwankwaso are in talks to form a merger. The Peoples Democratic Party's spokesman emphasized the need for unity to combat hunger and insecurity, aiming to challenge the ruling APC for a better Nigeria.

As Nigeria approaches the 2027 presidential election, the three leading opposition figures—Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Peter Obi of the Labour Party, and Rabiu Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP)—are reportedly in discussions about forming a merger. This potential alliance was revealed by Ibrahim Abdullahi, the national spokesman for the PDP, during an interview with Channels Television on September 2.

Abdullahi emphasized the need for these candidates to set aside personal ambitions to unite against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and address the pressing issues of hunger and insecurity facing Nigerians. He lamented the past failures of the PDP’s leadership, which, he argues, led to the loss of prominent figures like Obi and Kwankwaso. Abdullahi stated that their presence could have significantly impacted the outcome of the previous elections, possibly preventing the APC from winning by a narrow margin.

The PDP is reportedly engaged in ongoing discussions to potentially reintegrate these key figures into the party. Abdullahi noted that negotiations are taking place, with expectations that one candidate may concede to the other to provide a clear direction for the party. He expressed optimism that the lessons learned from past conflicts would guide their efforts to unite and serve the Nigerian populace, who are currently grappling with economic and security challenges.

This emerging coalition could reshape the political landscape in Nigeria, as these leaders seek to present a formidable front against the ruling party in the upcoming election.
