Peter Obi and Abia State Governor Alex Otti have summoned a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the Labour Party, set for April 9, 2025, in Abuja. The meeting follows the Supreme Court’s ruling dissolving the Julius Abure-led National Working Committee and aims to address leadership restructuring.
Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential flagbearer, and Alex Otti, governor of Abia State, have jointly convened a meeting of the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC).
The meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, April 9, 2025, in Abuja, and is expected to be a turning point for the party following recent leadership changes. According to a notice issued through Ibrahim Umar, spokesperson for the Peter Obi Media Reach (POMR), the NEC session will be followed by a town hall event involving major stakeholders and party organs at the Transcorp Hilton.
Key participants expected at the gathering include Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, Obi’s 2023 running mate, current and former senators aligned with the Labour Party, candidates from the 2023 elections, members of the dissolved National Working Committee, and representatives from labour unions like the NLC and TUC Political Commission.
This high-level meeting comes shortly after the Supreme Court decides to dissolve the Julius Abure-led National Working Committee, sparking internal debates about the party’s leadership direction. Political observers believe Obi and Otti are aiming to stabilize the party, rebuild internal consensus, and prepare for future electoral battles.
The outcome of the meeting is expected to shape not only the Labour Party’s internal structure but also its positioning ahead of the 2027 general elections.
