Peter Obi condemns the recent stampedes in Nigeria that claimed lives, including incidents in Ibadan, Anambra, and Abuja. He attributes these tragedies to systemic failures and the harsh economic conditions causing desperate measures. Obi urges the government to address food insecurity and support the country's vulnerable citizens.
Peter Obi, the Labour Party's presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, has expressed his deep concern over the recent stampedes that have taken lives across Nigeria. The incidents, including a tragic stampede at a funfair in Ibadan that claimed over 35 lives, and two others in Anambra and Abuja, resulted in numerous deaths, with at least 10 victims in the latter.
Obi took to his official X account to offer condolences, while emphasizing that the tragedies reflect deeper systemic failures within the country. He acknowledged the efforts of the event organizers in providing aid but pointed out that these incidents highlight the dire conditions many Nigerians face. He questioned how, in a nation blessed with abundant resources, citizens continue to suffer from hunger and the lack of necessities.
Obi further reflected on the extreme measures people are forced to take in an attempt to secure food, often resulting in fatal consequences. His heartfelt message called for a reevaluation of Nigeria’s economic situation, urging the government to address the root causes of these crises.
In response to the stampedes, President Bola Tinubu canceled his official engagements in Lagos to honor the victims. Obi also extended his condolences to the grieving families, expressing solidarity with the affected states.
