Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, has urged the Federal Government to introduce subsidies on electricity tariffs to alleviate the financial burden on less-privileged Nigerians.
Speaking during a visit to Bauchi State, Obi emphasized the importance of targeted interventions to mitigate the impact of tariff increases on struggling individuals. He advocated for measures to support small businesses and stimulate economic growth while underscoring the necessity of expanding power generation capacity.
The call for subsidies comes in the wake of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission's recent decision to raise tariffs for customers receiving 20 hours of power daily under the Band A classification, drawing criticism from the public due to prevailing economic challenges.
Obi's proposal aims to ensure that tariff adjustments primarily affect those with the means to bear the additional costs, sparing vulnerable households from further financial strain.
