Peter Obi has questioned the Tinubu administration’s transparency after the 2025 budget was increased to N54.2 trillion. He criticized the lack of a clear expenditure breakdown and called for accountability. Obi urged the National Assembly to disclose full details of the 2024 budget to ensure fiscal responsibility.

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has raised concerns over the transparency and accountability of the Tinubu administration’s decision to increase Nigeria’s 2025 budget from N49.7 trillion to N54.2 trillion. Obi criticized the lack of a clear breakdown of expenditures to justify the significant rise in government spending.

In a statement shared on his social media handle, the former Anambra governor emphasized that Nigerians deserve a detailed explanation of how national resources are being allocated. He stressed that such transparency is essential to ensure funds are spent on key sectors like education, healthcare, security, and poverty alleviation.

Obi also questioned the implementation of the previous Renewed Hope budget, which was passed in December 2023. He urged the National Assembly to make the full details of the 2024 budget public, arguing that accountability in governance is necessary for national progress.

"As we move toward passing the Budget of Restoration for 2025, openness and accountability must be upheld. Nigerians deserve to know how their money is being utilized," he stated.

The budget increase was officially communicated by President Bola Tinubu in letters addressed to both chambers of the National Assembly. However, Obi’s concerns reflect growing public demands for fiscal responsibility and greater scrutiny of government expenditures.

With economic challenges persisting, Obi’s remarks are expected to spark further debate on the effectiveness of Nigeria’s budgetary allocations and the need for improved governance.
