Amid internal turbulence, the Labour Party convened a pivotal National Executive Council (NEC) meeting on Wednesday at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja. The session was overseen by Nenadi Usman, a former Minister of Finance now serving as chairperson of the party's caretaker committee.
Prominent figures graced the gathering, including Peter Obi, the party’s 2023 presidential flagbearer; his running mate Datti Baba-Ahmed; and Abia State Governor Alex Otti. Other notable attendees were Olumide Akpata and Athan Achonu, governorship aspirants for Edo and Imo states, respectively.
The meeting unfolded just days after factional chairman Julius Abure issued stern warnings against the assembly, threatening disciplinary action against Obi and Otti. Nevertheless, lawmakers from both chambers of the National Assembly aligned with the Labour Party showed robust support by attending the Usman-led session.
During the deliberations, the NEC reaffirmed its trust in Obi, Baba-Ahmed, Otti, the caretaker committee, and the broader Obidient movement by passing a formal vote of confidence.
In her address, Usman urged reconciliation within the party, calling on former National Working Committee members to "put aside differences and work together for the party’s revival." She also hinted at a forthcoming review of the party’s recent governorship primary in Anambra State, promising a detailed statement in due course.
The Labour Party, navigating through a critical phase, appears determined to stabilize its ranks and chart a united course ahead of future electoral contests.
