Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, has launched his official TikTok account, quickly gaining over 6,000 followers in one hour. He encouraged followers to join him in building a "new Nigeria." This move follows former Kaduna Governor el-Rufai's recent TikTok debut.

Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate for the Labour Party, has made a significant move into the social media landscape by launching his official TikTok account. The former governor of Anambra state made the announcement in a video on Tuesday, reassuring his followers that it was his sole TikTok page. In the video, Obi encouraged users to join him in his mission of building a "new Nigeria."

The debut was met with an impressive response as Obi quickly gained over 6,000 followers within just one hour of launching his page. He also shared the link to his TikTok account on his other social media platforms, expanding his digital reach.

Obi's entrance into TikTok mirrors a similar move by former Kaduna governor Nasir el-Rufai, who joined the platform earlier. El-Rufai's account has amassed over 323,000 followers and 3 million views in just five days, highlighting the growing trend of Nigerian politicians embracing social media to engage with younger voters and build their political narratives.

This latest development comes after Obi's loss in the 2023 presidential election, where he finished third out of 18 candidates, behind the winner, Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Despite the electoral setback, Obi's use of TikTok signals a shift towards more digital, direct engagement with the electorate, particularly the youth demographic.
