He linked the threats to APC spokesperson Felix Morka's remarks. Obi remains committed to truth and democracy despite growing concerns over Nigeria's authoritarian drift and freedom of expression erosion.
Peter Obi, Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, has alleged threats to his life due to his outspoken criticism of President Bola Tinubu’s administration. Obi raised these concerns through a post on his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Monday.
He linked the threats to remarks by Felix Morka, the National Spokesperson of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Morka accused Obi of "crossing the line" with his critiques, warning of consequences for his actions.
Obi expressed alarm at Nigeria's growing descent into authoritarianism, emphasizing that freedom of expression is being systematically eroded. Despite these challenges, he vowed to continue speaking truthfully about the nation’s drift toward undemocratic practices.
In his post, Obi wrote, “Have I crossed the line? My New Year message has led to threats against my life, family, and those around me. Mr. Felix Morka claims I will face consequences, yet I remain committed to upholding decorum and truth.”
He urged Nigerians to view his New Year message and judge his words for themselves. Obi reiterated his dedication to fostering a freer society, adding, “May God help us create a better and freer society for the sake of our children.”
The former Anambra governor’s statement has sparked widespread debate online, with many expressing concern over the state of democracy and free speech in Nigeria.
