The controversy has sparked debates on free speech, with calls for the government to respect constructive criticism rather than intimidate dissenters.
Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has condemned the alleged intimidation of Ushie Rita Uguamaye, a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, who claimed she was threatened after posting a video criticizing the Tinubu administration.
Uguamaye, also known as Raye, shared her frustration over Nigeria’s economic struggles in a viral social media post. Shortly after, she alleged that NYSC officials warned her about the consequences of her remarks. The situation has since sparked a broader debate on free speech in the country.
Reacting to the controversy, Obi stated that attempts to silence criticism undermine democracy and accountability. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he drew parallels to his own experiences, revealing that he has also faced backlash for speaking out against government policies.
“A government that suppresses its citizens instead of addressing their concerns is neither democratic nor accountable,” Obi remarked. He urged Nigerian authorities to respect constructive criticism as a necessary element of governance rather than resorting to intimidation.
