Peter Obi, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, revealed the struggles of opposition politics in Nigeria, citing systemic hostility and personal sacrifices. He criticized societal resistance, urged President Tinubu to prioritize domestic issues, and called for unity and truth to address Nigeria’s economic and security challenges effectively.
Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has expressed the immense difficulties faced by opposition leaders in Nigeria. Speaking during a media chat in Abuja, Obi detailed systemic challenges and personal sacrifices that accompany opposition politics in the country.
“Being in opposition here is extremely challenging. If I shared the struggles my family and I endure, many would question how I remain steadfast,” he remarked. Obi highlighted societal resistance, recounting instances where people avoided associating with him due to fear of government backlash.
He shared, “Even casual greetings with colleagues are avoided. Businesses tied to opposition figures are dismantled. It’s a hostile environment.”
Despite the adversities, Obi emphasized his commitment to Nigeria’s progress. “If this is the price to pay for a better future, so be it. We must unite to rebuild our nation,” he urged.
Addressing Nigeria’s economic challenges, Obi criticized President Bola Tinubu’s frequent international trips, suggesting that 72 days of domestic engagement—two days per state—could significantly address economic and security issues. He predicted that such focused leadership could reduce inflation from 34% to 15%.
Obi also decried the prevalence of propaganda, calling for truth and unity. “We need to end the lies and focus on building this country,” he implored.
