Peter Obi, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, urges opposition leaders to speak out against Nigeria's collapse, emphasizing the growing poverty and hardship faced by citizens. He calls for unity in addressing the country's dire situation, following internal party disputes and a Supreme Court ruling on leadership.

Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 elections, has issued a stern call to opposition leaders to raise their voices against what he describes as the rapid collapse of Nigeria. Speaking at the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of his party in Abuja, Obi highlighted the dire economic and social conditions plaguing the nation, accusing the government of failing to address the worsening poverty and hardship facing ordinary Nigerians.

During his address at the meeting, held at the prestigious Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Obi painted a grim picture of the state of the country. He recounted personal experiences of how the situation has worsened, noting that even in places where he used to be offered hospitality, such as Abuja hotels, people now approach him with desperate pleas for help, unable to afford their return journeys. "People who used to feed well are now begging. The numbers are clear, and the indices are clear. Things are bad, and we must stand together for the right cause," Obi stated.

The Labour Party leader’s remarks were directed at both the government and the opposition, urging them to stop remaining silent in the face of these challenges. He emphasized the importance of speaking out against bad governance, saying, "We must speak when things are wrong. Nigeria is collapsing, and we need to act now."

Obi’s comments come at a time of significant political uncertainty, with the Labour Party embroiled in internal leadership disputes. The controversy surrounding the recent Supreme Court ruling on the party's national chairmanship has further heightened tensions. Despite this, Obi, along with prominent figures such as Abia State Governor Alex Otti, remains focused on addressing the systemic issues plaguing Nigeria.
