Mojisola Meranda has officially assumed the role of Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, marking a significant moment in the state's political history. In a formal ceremony, Meranda was accompanied by fellow lawmakers, except for the former Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa. The atmosphere was celebratory as the lawmakers chanted their support, saying, “You are the Speaker, continue your work.”
Following the ceremony, Meranda led the lawmakers to her office, where a prayer session was held, underscoring the importance of the occasion. Her rise to the position of Speaker comes amidst controversy regarding Obasa’s removal, which he argues was unconstitutional and lacked due process.
Security around the Assembly has been heightened to ensure a peaceful transition and smooth plenary sessions. A directive from the Acting Clerk of the House, Taiwo Ottun, emphasized that only staff with valid ID cards would be allowed access to the premises. The Lagos State Police have also pledged to maintain order outside the Assembly, with Commissioner Ishola Olawale assuring the public of security during this politically charged time.
