Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, recently visited Dele Farotimi at his Lagos home, marking their first meeting since Farotimi's release from the Ekiti correctional center. Farotimi, a former spokesperson for Obi’s presidential campaign, had been detained for 21 days over allegations of defamation.
The police accused Farotimi of defaming Afe Babalola, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, in his book, Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System. Arrested in Lagos on December 3, 2024, Farotimi was taken to Ekiti, where a magistrate court remanded him. He was granted bail of N30 million on December 24 and subsequently regained his freedom.
In a post on X, Obi expressed admiration for Farotimi’s resilience and commitment to advocating for a better Nigeria. "I was pleased to find him in good spirits and deeply encouraged by his unwavering dedication to the struggle," Obi wrote, adding that Farotimi represents courage and determination.
Obi’s visit followed a separate meeting with former President Olusegun Obasanjo, underscoring his continued engagement with key figures in Nigeria’s sociopolitical landscape.
