The Borno State Police Command has confirmed the abduction of High Court Judge, Justice Haruna Mshelia, along with his wife and orderly, by suspected Boko Haram insurgents in Gujba village, Yobe State. The incident was confirmed by ASP Kenneth Nahum Daso, the Command’s Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), who also revealed that two vehicles filled with passengers were abducted on the Damaturu – Kamuya – Buratai Road.

A joint security investigation team has been established to track the whereabouts of the abductees and facilitate their rescue. The public has been urged to provide any useful information that can aid in the investigation and rescue operation.

The abduction occurred on Monday, June 24, 2024, along the Damaturu-Biu road. Justice Mshelia, his wife, driver, and security escort were traveling in his vehicle when they were ambushed. According to reports, as the judge’s vehicle approached a curve between Burutai and Buni-Gari, armed men emerged from the bushes, barricaded the road, and opened fire. In the ensuing chaos, Justice Mshelia’s vehicle was intercepted by another group of insurgents, who took them hostage and led them into the Sambisa Forest.

The police and security agencies are actively working to secure the release of the abductees and ensure their safe return. The incident has heightened concerns over the security situation in the region, particularly on the Damaturu – Kamuya – Buratai Road, which has seen increased insurgent activity.
