A tragic incident occurred in Kuje, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), on January 31, 2025, when a police officer accidentally discharged his weapon, fatally shooting a man identified as Musa Orido. The officer had attempted to intervene in a heated argument between two men outside a local supermarket.

As tensions rose, the officer, trying to disperse the growing crowd, aimed his weapon into the air. However, in a moment of chaos, a person in the crowd allegedly touched the gun, causing it to fire and strike Orido in the head. Eyewitnesses described the situation quickly spiraling into a violent protest, with locals clashing with the police. Angered youths set fire to a vehicle near the supermarket.

The unrest escalated until military personnel and additional police units arrived to restore order. The FCT Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, confirmed the incident and assured that the officer involved had been detained while an investigation is underway.

Though the violence has since subsided, the tragic loss of life and the subsequent unrest highlight the ongoing tensions in the area. The community remains on edge as authorities work to address the aftermath.
