The Nigeria Police Force has called Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke to suspend the upcoming local government elections due to security concerns. The police, citing intelligence reports, warned of potential violence as various groups, including political factions, were allegedly mobilizing to disrupt the elections.
Tensions have been high in Osun following disputes between the ruling PDP and opposition APC over local government administration. On Thursday, Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, also advised Adeleke to halt the elections, referencing a recent Court of Appeal ruling that overturned an earlier judgment nullifying previous elections held under former Governor Adegboyega Oyetola.
Despite these warnings, Adeleke has insisted the elections will proceed as planned. However, police spokesperson ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi stated that the Force has credible intelligence suggesting a high risk of unrest. He emphasized that while security agencies are prepared to maintain order, postponing the elections would be the safest course of action to prevent chaos and ensure public safety.
The police further highlighted the legal uncertainties surrounding the elections, citing ongoing court cases that could complicate the process. Adejobi urged all political stakeholders to prioritize peace and stability, warning that security agencies would take necessary measures to prevent any breakdown of law and order.
With growing concerns over security and legal disputes, the Osun State government faces mounting pressure to reconsider its stance on the scheduled elections.
