Pope Francis is expected to return to the Vatican on Sunday following a five-week hospitalization for pneumonia. The 88-year-old pontiff, who previously had part of his lung removed, has shown signs of recovery but will require at least two months of convalescence, according to his doctors.

Medical experts at Gemelli Hospital in Rome stated that further progress would be best achieved at his Vatican residence, Saint Martha’s House. Though he is now breathing without an oxygen mask, they emphasized that he needs to rest before resuming his regular duties.

His prolonged absence has raised concerns about his ability to lead upcoming Easter celebrations, a crucial period in the Christian calendar. However, Vatican officials dismissed speculations about his resignation, reaffirming that Pope Francis remains committed to his role.

Before leaving the hospital, the pope is expected to greet well-wishers and offer a brief blessing, marking his first public appearance since February 14. Catholics worldwide have been praying for his recovery, leaving flowers and messages outside the hospital.

During his hospitalization, the pope faced critical moments requiring assisted breathing, but he remained conscious throughout. Doctors revealed that his pneumonia affected his voice, and he will need physical rehabilitation to regain normal speech.

While Francis is set to return home, his immediate schedule remains uncertain as he focuses on recuperation. The Vatican has assured the faithful that updates on his health and engagements will be provided in due course.
