The Nigerian Presidency dismisses UK Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch's remarks comparing Britain’s governance issues to Nigeria’s, stating they won’t affect Nigeria’s international relations or investment efforts. Daniel Bwala, Special Adviser on Policy Communications, criticized Badenoch’s populist rhetoric, arguing it denigrates Nigeria for political gain.

The Nigerian Presidency has downplayed the impact of UK Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch’s recent remarks comparing the UK’s governance issues to Nigeria’s. In a speech, Badenoch warned of the risks of ineffective governance in Britain, likening it to Nigeria’s challenges. However, Daniel Bwala, the Special Adviser to the President on Policy Communications, dismissed her comments as irrelevant to Nigeria’s diplomatic relations and efforts to attract investment. He emphasized that since Badenoch is not in power, her statements would not affect Nigeria’s international standing.

Bwala acknowledged Badenoch’s achievements but argued that her rhetoric, which capitalizes on populism, was detrimental. He suggested that Badenoch’s criticism of Nigeria was part of a strategy to gain support from her party’s right-wing base. Bwala also pointed out that UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, of Indian origin, has never used negative rhetoric about India to bolster his position, unlike Badenoch’s approach toward Nigeria.

Badenoch, who has previously voiced her concerns about the influence of Nigerian governance on global perceptions, continues to face backlash for her remarks. Despite this, Nigeria’s government remains confident that her statements will not undermine efforts to foster international cooperation or attract foreign investments.
