The Nigerian presidency has fired back at Peter Obi, accusing him of not moving on from his 2023 election defeat. Daniel Bwala dismissed Obi’s criticisms of Tinubu, calling them factually weak. Obi had blamed Tinubu for Nigeria’s economic woes, sparking fresh political tensions ahead of the 2027 elections.
The Nigerian presidency has fired back at Peter Obi, the former Labour Party presidential candidate, following his recent criticisms of President Bola Tinubu’s administration. Daniel Bwala, Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Policy Communication, dismissed Obi’s remarks, claiming he is still struggling to accept his defeat in the 2023 election.
In a post on X, Bwala described Obi’s opposition stance as weak and lacking factual depth. “He was speaking devoid of facts, logical analysis, and almost sounded like a tinkling cymbal or a sounding brass,” Bwala wrote, adding that Nigeria "dodged a bullet" by not electing Obi.
Obi had earlier criticized Tinubu’s leadership, blaming him for the economic downturn, particularly the naira’s depreciation from N400 to N1,500 per dollar. He argued that a competent leader could turn the situation around, questioning the government’s claims of job creation and foreign investment.
Bwala’s comments sparked reactions from political analysts and social media users. Some defended Obi’s stance, arguing that his criticisms reflect the realities of many Nigerians, while others sided with the presidency, calling for Obi to move on from the election.
As the 2027 elections draw closer, the political battle between Obi and Tinubu’s camp is expected to intensify, with both sides vying for public support in an increasingly divided political landscape.
